The NIAAA defines heavy drinking as a pattern of alcohol consumption that causes the blood alcohol concentration (BAC) to be 0.08 percent (or 0.08 grams of alcohol per deciliter) or more. For a typical adult, this pattern corresponds to consuming 5 or more drinks (men), or 4 or more drinks (women), in approximately 2 hours. Usually, the blood alcohol concentration (BAC) will increase to 0.08% or more after heavy drinking. For women, binge drinking is defined as drinking four or more drinks in a two-hour period. For men, binge drinking is identified as having five or more drinks over the course of two hours.
