The reason the Big Book has so much weight in A, A. is because it has the instructions for staying sober. Nowadays, people follow his suggestions and are still sober. Ultimately, the program and information described in the Big Book, as well as the program followed at AA meetings, are not for everyone.
As the number of AA members diversified, non-Christians sought to participate in group meetings and apply their principles; as a result, the notion of a higher power became generalized to allow people from all backgrounds to benefit from the program.
